Philpot, KY!

In May 2007, DSCC began construction on a 345 kV switching station for Big Rivers Electric Corporation in Philpot, KY. This on-going project, currently scheduled to complete in December 2007 is the largest capacity station project Dillard Smith has performed to date. The project demonstrates Dillard’s technical capabilities (procuring and installing grounding grid, substation steel, coupling capacitors, wave traps, surge arrestors, GOAB switches, aluminum bus, underground and above ground cabling, terminating and testing) as well as its managerial abilities (site clearing, road building, site grading, site layout and installation of 130 substation foundations).

Additionally the project has nearly 1 mile of 345 kV transmission line that taps an existing line on Big Rivers system. The double-bundle 1590 ACSR line consists of six, 120’ tubular steel transmission structures set on foundations ranging in size from 7’ – 11’ diameter and averaging 40’ of depth. There are two additional tubular steel poles that set in line with a second existing transmission line owned by Kentucky Utilities that runs north of the project. These structures set on similar foundations and will replace two existing wood, H-frame structures to make a loop into the new station.

One of the major challenges to completing this project has been performing the work on or under the existing 345 kV transmission lines. Customers depend heavily on these lines and outage availability has been inconsistent. We have worked with Big Rivers to coordinate outages when they are available, and have also offered alternative options to perform the work with the lines energized. Our Energized Services team was able to use our robotic arm technology, “single pick” to gain additional ground clearance for the foundation installation when an outage was unavailable. We’ve also offered a barehand procedure as a possible altenative to perform the wire work energized.

This project has been a great opportunity to showcase the diverse skill set that Dillard Smith Construction Company offers. From performing electrical work to partnering with sister company, Longfellow Drilling, for foundation work to utilizing energized services, the Daviess EHV Switching Station has demonstrated what it means to be a Quanta company…….“the Power of One.”
